Let There Be Light!

How lighting affects the overall mood of any room…

Throughout my career I feel that I have always been drawn to lighting. Whether it be chandeliers, sconces, or lamps, they are all pieces that continue to excite me as part of the design process.

(The photo below by Lantern Masters, Inc. is only a small sample of the varieties available).

What many people don’t realize is how much lighting affects a room and how important it is in the overall aesthetic. The placement and type of lighting can either be a positive or a negative factor. For example, an overlit room can be just as unpleasant as a too dimly lit room (unless you’re a vampire). With that being said, my number one rule is to have everything on a dimmer switch so that the lighting can be adjusted accordingly and controlled.

I also believe that most rooms should contain three tiers of lighting. The first tier can consist of ceiling lights including high hats and chandeliers. The second tier includes sconces, and the third tier, lamps.

There is a vast selection of fixtures these days; your options are endless. Whether they be antique or reproduction, you have a variety of pieces ranging from traditional to contemporary styles.

Choosing these fixtures is not always an easy task. So take your time in selecting your lighting as it will enhance the beauty of every room.

Are you or someone you know concerned about your lighting choices at this moment? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.

And please share this with your friends on Facebook!

Best,

Marilyn
